Display Progress Bar for Backup Exec Jobs in vCenter Client

A few days ago, a colleague told me that he would highly appreciate, if one could see the actual status of running backups of Backup Exec within VMware’s vCenter Client.
“Wait a minute”, I said, “this functionality is already available in Backup Exec for some years now.”

So here’s, what you have to do to enable a progress bar for running backup jobs within the vCenter Client’s activity monitor:

Edit the Registry at your own risk. Inappropriate changes to the Windows Registry can damage or even disable the operating system!
To safeguard against such an accident, I highly recommend that you back up your existing registry after launching the Registry Editor and before making any changes.

  1. Open the registry editor.
  2. Browse to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\VMware Agent.
  3. Change the value Enable progress bar in VI client to 1 (default is 0).
  4. Close the registry editor.
